Keystroke shortcuts are the fastest way to interact with your Mac.

Handy Shortcuts in Microsoft Word. As proofreaders, we’re generally against shortcuts. After all, editing a document requires painstaking attention to detail, so we can’t afford to cut corners! Nevertheless, whether you’re writing or editing a document, knowing a few shortcuts in Microsoft Word is a good idea. Check out our suggestions.
This time, I’m going to look at shortcuts for an app most of us use a daily basis, Microsoft Word.
- Shortcuts For Mac Computer; Shortcut For Bold In Word; Keyboard shortcuts for Microsoft Word on Windows. Decrease font size 1 point. You can access every command in Word by using a shortcut. Note: Add-ins and other programs may add new tabs to the ribbon.
- Move to the right edge of the current word (works for left-to-right and right-to-left text) Option-Right Arrow. Move the insertion point to the beginning of the current text area (document, text box, shape, or table cell) Command-Up Arrow.
- Start dictation. Press Fn twice. Open the template chooser. Open the template chooser and show the Language pop-up menu. Close the template chooser. Open an existing document. Save a document. Duplicate a document.
- Quit - Closes Microsoft Word. Bold - Formats selected text; make text bold, or remove bold formatting Undo the last action. This selection can be repeated several times. Italic - Formats selected text; make text italic or remove italic Redo - After an action has been undone, it can be reinstated in the document.
These shortcuts are for Microsoft Word for Mac 2011, but may work in other versions.

Keystroke Shortcuts use modifier keys. You already use modifier keys every day. Here’s how…
Tap the “h” key and you get a lower case “h”

Hold the Shift key and tap the “h” key and you get an upper case “H”
The Shift key is a Modifier Key.
All Modifier Keys work this way. That’s it.
Modifier keys on the Mac include: Shift, Control, Option, Command and Function.
These keys are located at the bottom left hand corner of your keyboard and can be seen in the photo above.
Keystroke Shortcuts in Microsoft Word
Command + B – Bold highlighted text.
Command + U – Underline highlighted text.
Command + I – Italicize highlighted text.
Command + R – Right Justify highlighted text.
Command + L – Left Justify highlighted text.
Command + E – Center Justify highlighted text.
Control + Shift + M – Indent highlighted text to the left.
Command + Shift + M – De-indent highlighted text from the left.
Command + 1 or Command + 2 or Command + 5 – Single, Double or 1.5 line spacing of highlighted text.
Shift + Return – Insert a line break. Also known as a Soft Return.
Command + D – Opens the text formatting menu.
Command + P – Print
These are 11 pretty basic commands. In a future post, we’ll cover some more advanced shortcuts.

Look at the Menu Bar in any Application. Opposite each command you’ll find symbols showing it’s keyboard shortcut.
This Is Too Complicated. I Don’t Want To Change!
You made it this far… but do what makes you feel comfortable.
My advice… Learn one shortcut a week. If you see any benefit, try another.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts in MS Word
You can avoid reaching for the mouse if you are familiar with keyboard shortcuts.
If you forget one of these, use the mouse and go to the menu bar.
In each pull down menu you will see keyboard commands given in the right side of the window.
Commonly used keyboard combinations
To use one of these combinations Hold the Ctrl or Alt key down and strike the letter key
Open a new word document quickly. | Cut- Removes the selection from the active document and places it on the clipboard. | ||||
Opens a previously saved document. | Copies the selection to the clipboard | ||||
Closes the active window, but does not Exit Word. | Paste - Inserts the contents of the clipboard at the insertion point (cursor) or whatever is selected. | ||||
Saves the active document with its current file name, location and format. | Selects all text and graphics in the active window. | ||||
Prints the active file, also gives the opportunity to change print options | Find - Searches for specified text in the active document | ||||
Exit - Closes Microsoft Word. | Bold - Formats selected text; make text bold, or remove bold formatting | ||||
Undo the last action. This selection can be repeated several times. | Italic - Formats selected text; make text italic or remove italic | ||||

Sailor moon episode 21. 1. Open a new Word document and type a line of text. If you wish to do so you could copy this line and paste it into the document.
2. Do not reach for your mouse
3. Move your cursor back into the middle of the line you just typed
4. Highlight more than one word (Hint: Extend to left or right to highlight more than the cursor width.)
5. Cut the highlighted text from the document
6. Open a new Word document
7. Paste the text you cut from the first document into the new document
8. Save the document
2. Do not reach for your mouse
3. Move your cursor back into the middle of the line you just typed
4. Highlight more than one word (Hint: Extend to left or right to highlight more than the cursor width.)
5. Cut the highlighted text from the document
6. Open a new Word document
7. Paste the text you cut from the first document into the new document
8. Save the document
Each of the steps in the list above should have been accomplished without the use of your mouse. If you reached for the rodent, review the two tables above, go back to step 1 and try again. Good luck.
